UX Portfolio

wynnmo.design is a website that showcases some of my most recent UX case studies. These case studies break down how I tackle different UX challenges, while the site’s theme and design are inspired by things important to me - featuring some of my favorite color combinations and my own paintings of a distinctive rabbit motif, a nod to my connection with the Chinese rabbit deity, Tu’er Shen.

The Challenge

To document my journey as a UX designer, I wanted to create a website to showcase my case studies.

While this site acts a portfolio, it was important for me to have the look and feel be centered around my identity.

I also wanted the site to convey a sense of exploration - capturing the excitement I usually feel when discovering a seemingly simple website that becomes highly interactive as I click around.

Chinese rabbit deity, Tu’er Shen

I decided to center the website around rabbit motifs as a nod to the Chinese rabbit deity Tu'er Shen. Tu’er Shen is a Chinese folk deity, often called the Rabbit God, who is revered as a guardian of male same-sex love and queer relationships within Chinese tradition.

Being queer and Chinese means carrying identities that overlap in complex ways. My queerness shapes how I love and connect, while my Chinese heritage roots me in culture and tradition. Tu’er Shen embodies both. Connecting with Tu’er Shen reminds me that queerness is not separate from my heritage, but part of it. This intersection has shaped me into someone who values complexity and finds belonging in both worlds.

Watercolors

I wanted to create a dreamy look with the rabbit motif. I experimented by blotting water color on a canvas, then drawing rabbit outlines over top to create different frames of movement. The idea is to stitch these movement frames to create a short and simple animation of the bunny jumping. This became the hero image/video of the site.

Current State

This site is replacing my current site, wynnmo.com, as my portfolio.

These are the pain points I identified with wynnmo.com:

These are the pain points I identified with wynnmo.com:

  • Site contained a mixed bag of coding/art projects during my time studying engineering at university - site needed to focus on UX case studies.

  • No identity, did not feel like the site aligned and presented who I am

  • Built from scratch using React, html, and css. Although this gave me a lot of flexibility, it was time consuming and hard to manage (especially when my coding skills got rusty!)

Site Layout

The home page contains a bio, contact details, a list of case studies to select from, and a section for more details about me. The "currently" component on the bottom right of the screen is an easter egg that plays an animation when a user interacts with that button.

It takes one click from the home page to view a case study.

The idea is to make viewing case studies as accessible as possible - just one click away.

ASCII Art

If a curious user clicked on the 'Currently: dreaming' button, it would be begin an ascii animation on the home page. Clicking again will cycle another set of ascii animations. There are currently two sets to cycle through.

Bunny cursor

The site uses a bunny cursor. When hovering over a clickable component, the right bunny ear will lower - giving the cursor a pointing effect with its upright ear on the left.
